Insomnia affects nearly a third of the UK population at some point in their lives. Sleep is a state of consciousness which gives us time to rest and build up our strength. But insomnia can leave you feeling drained and exhausted, resulting in poor performance at work, lack of concentration and irritable. Normal everyday activities can be severely affected due to excessive tiredness and driving or operating machinery could become quite dangerous. Insomnia can last for days, weeks or even years and can be extremely distressing and frustrating. If the condition lasts 2 to 3 days it is often referred to as transient insomnia, for more than a few days but less than 3 weeks its is called short-term insomnia. More than 3 weeks it is referred to as chronic insomnia. Chronic insomnia can lead to serious health conditions.
